Canada's Super Visa Just Got Easier! New Health Insurance Options Announced

Strengthening Family Bonds Through the Super Visa

Canada remains dedicated to keeping families together through its immigration programs. The Super Visa offers an excellent opportunity for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit for extended periods, allowing them to stay for up to five years per visit, with the option to extend their stay while in Canada.

New Health Insurance Flexibility for Super Visa Applicants

To be eligible for a Super Visa, applicants must provide proof of private health insurance, as they do not qualify for provincial or territorial health care coverage. Previously, this insurance could only be obtained from Canadian providers. However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a significant change:

Super Visa applicants can now purchase health insurance from foreign providers.

This adjustment makes the Super Visa more accessible while maintaining essential medical coverage for visitors.

Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Health Insurance Policies

For a foreign health insurance policy to be considered valid for a Super Visa, it must:

  • Be issued by an insurance company authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to provide accident and sickness insurance.

  • Appear on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions.

  • Be issued under the company’s insurance business in Canada.

Prospective applicants can verify a foreign insurance company’s authorization by visiting the OSFI website.

Maintaining Valid Health Coverage During the Stay

Super Visa holders must ensure their private health insurance remains valid for the entire duration of their stay in Canada. If their coverage expires before they leave, they may need to renew their health insurance while still in Canada. A valid insurance policy is required for each entry into Canada.

Benefits of This Change

This updated policy provides greater flexibility for families looking to reunite while ensuring that visitors have sufficient health coverage. By allowing more insurance options, Canada continues to support family reunification while maintaining health care requirements for visitors.
