Are you looking to explore Canada while gaining valuable work experience? The International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers just that—but time is running out! The deadline for 2024 applications is October 21.
Overview of the IEC Program
The International Experience Canada (IEC) program, managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), was opened in December 2023. It allows young people from over 30 countries, which have Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada, to temporarily live and work here. For 2024, the IEC has a target of 90,000 applications.
How the IEC Works
This work permit program is designed for youth aged 18-35 (or 18-30 for some countries) who want to experience life in Canada while gaining professional and cultural exposure.
- Eligibility: Candidates must meet basic eligibility criteria to submit a profile to the IEC pool.
- Selection Process: IRCC selects profiles from the pool and invites candidates to apply for a work permit. The number of participations varies by country and category.
IEC Program Streams
The IEC program offers three distinct streams for applicants:
-
International Co-op (Internship): Provides an opportunity for youth to intern with a Canadian company. Applicants must secure a co-op placement before applying.
-
Young Professionals: This stream is for those with a job offer in Canada. The work permit is employer-specific, allowing candidates to work for one employer during their stay.
-
Working Holiday: An open work permit allowing participants to work for most employers across Canada for up to two years, providing maximum flexibility in work and travel.
Post-Invitation Steps
Once selected, candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and have 20 days to submit their work permit application. The timeline will be confirmed in their online IRCC account.
Arriving in Canada
When entering Canada, IEC participants should be prepared to present the following:
- Passport
- Port of Entry Letter
- Proof of sufficient funds (equivalent to $2,500)
- Proof of health insurance
- Return flight or funds to purchase one
Ensure bank statements, showing proof of funds, are dated no more than one week before your departure.
Don’t miss out on this opportunity! Apply before October 21 to make the most of your experience in Canada through the IEC program.
